Private 1-on-1 Math Coaching

Your child shouldn’t
need you at the table
to do math.

Northbound diagnoses the gaps other tutors miss and coaches students to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence, so they stop freezing and start trusting their own thinking.

The result is a student who picks up a hard problem, knows how to start, and works through it without waiting for you.

We work with a limited number of families at a time.

Who Coaching Is For

The child is capable. The independence
is not there yet.

Northbound is built for students who are bright enough to do more, but still freeze on unfamiliar problems, rely too heavily on help, or move through math without deep understanding.

When parents reach out

Their child is doing fine on paper, but math at home still requires too much prompting, explaining, or rescuing.

What the child is like

Capable, often motivated, sometimes inconsistent — especially when the path is not obvious or the work gets harder.

Who this is not for

Families mainly looking for homework completion, emergency grade recovery, or constant reteaching of classroom material.

Why Northbound Feels Different

This is not homework help with better branding.

Traditional tutoring often reacts to what happened in class. Northbound starts earlier: where the understanding breaks down, how your child approaches hard problems, and what keeps them from working independently.

What most tutoring does

Focuses on finishing assignments, reviewing the latest quiz, and getting the student through this week's material.

What Northbound does

Diagnoses gaps, rebuilds understanding, and coaches a clearer way of thinking so your child can handle harder work with less outside help.

Meet Your Coach

Joshua Smith

Joshua began college at 14 and was in full-time engineering by 15. While coaching, he kept seeing very smart capable students unable to solve unfamiliar problems. Most instruction focuses on the steps to solve a specific problem, not the reasoning to solve any problem. He developed his own framework to solve problems in advanced math and engineering and teaches this to students: FGS (Find, Given, Solve) define what you’re trying to find, name what you’ve been given, then map the path between them. Every student learns to reach for that structure first, because it works when the problem changes shape and rote memorization fails.

Outside of coaching, Joshua is an undergraduate studying Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics who is obsessed with aerospace and fast cars. He travels as much as he can, seeks out new food, and explores cities with the same curiosity he brings to a hard problem. His next trip is to Taiwan. Students tend to find him easy to talk to, and the work tends to feel less like tutoring than like thinking alongside someone who genuinely finds this stuff interesting.

What's Included

A complete coaching system.

Everything is built to help your child think more independently, work with greater clarity, and rely less on outside help.

Skills Audit & Mastery Blueprint

A diagnostic evaluation which reveals conceptual gaps and gives you the tools needed to work through those gaps with your child

Private Academic Mentorship

Private 60-minute sessions via Zoom. Individualized instruction targeting conceptual depth and problem-solving fluency

Curated Daily Problem Sets

No more than 15 minutes of daily practice to follow up on the previous session, gauge progress, and prepare for the next session. Feedback is provided through the student portal

Confidence & Progress Tracking

To build a resilient mathematical identity, we track academic confidence and conceptual understanding. Students are positively reinforced after each session and throughout the week in the student portal

Monthly Parent Briefing

A 30-minute overview of where your child is academically and how their confidence and problem-solving has improved over the last four weeks

Academic Email Support

Priority email access and responsive problem-solving support between sessions

Investment

The program is matched to your child. So is the price.

Coaching starts with the Skills Audit, not a rate sheet. On your review call we walk through what the audit found, which program fits, exactly what is included, and what it costs. If Northbound is not the right fit, we will tell you that too.

Every program is backed by a measured guarantee: we re-administer the Skills Audit after 8 weeks, and if your child’s score has not improved, we keep coaching at no additional charge until it does.

Results

The method was working before the program had a name.

Northbound's approach to problem-solving has helped students build stronger habits, more confidence, and readiness for more demanding math.

Confidence and preparation

“I enjoyed his push to challenge me which helped me enhance my study habits and overall get me more ready for middle school. I learned about reciprocals ahead of time to help me when I needed it at school.”

Parent

“He made learning math fun. Super patient. Super professional.”

Outcomes

  • Standard 7th grade placement to honors mathematics through targeted coaching sessions

  • 8th grader prepared for rigorous private high school geometry through a focused summer intensive

  • Elementary students solving problems 2 grade levels ahead within targeted concept areas

Weekly reports. Monthly briefings. A process parents can actually follow.

Student independence

“I like how Joshua makes fun challenges, and if I got a math problem wrong he would not be mad. Joshua taught me how to do long division 100%.”

Parent

“Joshua does a great job of balancing the student learning needs and challenging them with new material.”

Get Started

How It Works

Start with clarity first. Enrollment only happens if coaching is the right fit.

01

Register & book your call

A brief intake form that tells us about your child, plus a review call time you pick on the spot.

02

Complete the Skills Audit

A short diagnostic your child completes independently before the call, so we can see where understanding is solid and where it breaks down.

03

Review call

We walk through the results, discuss whether coaching is the right fit, and outline the best next step from there.

Spots are limited. We'll be in touch within 24 hours.
